The Story Behind the KARAK Collection
Introduction
Hello, I’m Shradha, the artist behind all things at Terribly Real. Fashion design is my passion, and I pour my heart and soul into every piece I create. Today, I want to share the story behind the KARAK collection, a series of designs deeply rooted in cultural significance and personal expression.
Inspiration
Having been born and raised in Dubai, I’ve had the privilege of experiencing its rich cultural tapestry firsthand. Dubai is a melting pot of cultures, each contributing to the vibrant life of the city. One thing that unites us all, regardless of our backgrounds, is the beloved KARAK tea. It’s a staple in our daily lives, a symbol of community and comfort. The KARAK collection was inspired by this unifying element. I wanted to create fashion that people could carry with them, owning a piece of the cultural significance of KARAK tea.
Concept Development
Turning the initial idea into a concrete concept was a journey in itself. I began by exploring various representations of KARAK – from tea cups to shops. However, I realized that to truly capture its essence, the art needed to be authentic and have a touch of Arabic influence. I experimented with different typographies in both English and Arabic. After several trials, I found my direction with a graffiti-style stipple design that boldly spelled out “KARAK” in Arabic. The second design drew inspiration from a clean, KARAK-themed art, reminiscent of the cozy coffee shops that are a staple in Dubai. The beauty of Middle Eastern art lies in its appreciation for individual expression, where there’s no right or wrong – just a reflection of the artist’s vision.
Challenges and Conceptualization
The journey wasn’t without its challenges. Conceptualizing the designs required balancing authenticity with creativity. It was essential to keep the art true to its roots while ensuring it resonated with a diverse audience. This phase involved a lot of experimentation and refinement, leading to the creation of designs that were both meaningful and visually appealing.
Design Process
With a clear concept in mind, the next step was translating it onto the garments – a process that was both exciting and meticulous. The placement of the design on the garment was crucial, as it needed to convey the right message and aesthetic. I experimented with various repeat patterns, some of which didn’t work out, but each attempt brought me closer to the final design. The colors were another vital aspect. After trying multiple variations, I settled on brown and yellow. These colors not only represent the rich hues of KARAK tea but also looked fantastic, adding depth and vibrancy to the designs.
Final Collection
The KARAK collection is a celebration of cultural diversity and unity. Each piece, especially the Black KARAK Hoodie, tells a story of the shared experience of enjoying KARAK tea. The intricate patterns and high-quality fabric make it a standout piece, embodying a blend of tradition and modernity. The collection is designed for those who appreciate fashion with a deeper meaning, carrying a piece of cultural heritage with them.
